There are children willing to move states and transfer schools just to play football for a chance at a future to play college football. Many teams in the ISL have seniors who care more about having a season this year than anything else because of their recruiting and their love for the sport. We can also focus on avoiding confined spaces such as locker rooms and meeting rooms.įootball gives student-athletes opportunities that no other sport can give someone. If states with higher Covid-19 risk such as Florida and Texas can play in the fall then why can't we play in the Spring? The ISL can pick from some of the best ideas other states have used for their fall seasons, in addition to the ideas that the MIAA has already recommended, and the ISL can incorporate them into the spring season. Teams in other states have already started their fall season and started preparing as early as August 1st. MIAA member teams have proposed the following safety changes for their season: a shorter season, limited practice time, rule modifications, and new required equipment including full-face shields, mouthpieces attached to facemasks, the use of gloves, and changes to practice schedules including reduced contact. In signing, you recognize that the safety and well-being of athletes and coaches is a priority, that special provisions will need to be made to protect the safety of players and coaches, that some players may choose to opt-out of the season, and that adjustments and limitations may be necessary over the course of the season. We need your help in telling the ISL along with our State and School leaders that we support a schedule that includes football in the Spring. For our teams to be competitive, we need the participation and involvement of a large number of students, and we enjoy our most consistent competitive success when our best athletes are “multiple” rather than “singular.” Our lower teams are as important as our varsity teams and we “grow” our own athletes. Please sign our petition on behalf of the kids, parents, coaches, teachers, and administrators who are supporting a Spring Season for football in the ISL. Though each year several of our graduates go on to participate in athletics at the college level, we ask our athletes to put aside personal aspirations and individual ambitions in service to the greater community. Thus, we discourage students from seeing sports at Roxbury Latin as a self-serving exercise to hone their “pre-professional” skills or credentials for the next level of competition. As a small school, we want our students to be generalists and not specialists-in athletics as in all other respects. Games, practices, and all other team activities continue the work of the academic day we expect our boys to give their best effort, work well with their teammates, improve their skills and sharpen their contributions, and-of course-find pleasure in the process. Staffed almost exclusively by faculty members, the department promotes the pursuit of excellence, the development of loyalty and good sportsmanship, perseverance and resilience. Our mission is intimately connected to the fundamental values and guiding principles of the school. The athletic program at Roxbury Latin strives to realize the Classical maxim mens sana in corpore sano-a sound mind in a sound body.
